Preparation for Shearing Day

To help ensure everything runs smoothly, I’ll provide you with an estimated arrival time for the day. If setting up a secure pen for your animals is a challenge, please don’t hesitate to reach out beforehand.

On sunny days, a shaded area is not only appreciated but also helps keep your animals relaxed and happy during the process. Likewise, a covered area will make sure your animals get shorn on those wet days too.

A level working area also makes life easier for everyone involved.

By being well-prepared for shearing day, we can create a stress-free experience for everyone involved while prioritizing the care and welfare of your animals. Your preparation makes a world of difference.

Thank you for helping us make shearing day a positive experience for you and your animals!

Tips for Setting Up the Perfect Pen

For jobs with fewer than 10 animals, a 3x3m pen on a flat surface works perfectly. There’s no need to overthink it—simple solutions like old gates, stock panels, or temporary fence panels are great for the job!

It’s important to ensure the pen is secure to prevent your animals from getting away, as this could make it difficult for us to complete the shearing. A good guideline is to keep the pen small enough that you can comfortably approach and touch your animals without needing to chase them.

By setting up a well-designed pen, you’ll help ensure a smooth, stress-free shearing day for everyone involved—especially your animals!

Fasting Guidelines

Sheep
To ensure your sheep remain comfortable during shearing, it’s best to keep them off food and water overnight, or for at least 12 hours. This practice helps empty their stomachs, reducing stress and minimising the risk of health complications during shearing. Sheep with full bellies tend to kick and struggle more during the process, which can increase the chance of nicks or cuts to both the sheep and the shearer. However, exceptions should be made for heavily pregnant sheep or young lambs, as their needs differ. This approach aligns with work-safe practices and prioritizes the health and well-being of your animals.

Alpacas
Alpacas should ideally be penned up at least 2 hours before shearing—overnight is even better if possible. While it’s good practice to keep them off food and water during this time, it isn’t strictly essential.

If you have any specific concerns or questions about preparing your animals, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re here to help ensure a safe, stress-free experience for both you and your animals!
